Opportunities in Curriculum

The ExPAND framework empowers schools to integrate AI meaningfully across subjects. In English Language Education, it enhances students' writing, reading and exam performance. In Values Education, it builds ethical awareness and responsible AI use. In STEAM, it sparks creativity, innovation and problem-solving. Collectively, these applications position ExPAND as a comprehensive approach to preparing students with the skills required for an AI-driven future.

English Language Education

The ExPAND framework enriches English learning by integrating AI into reading, writing, and speaking tasks that strengthen communication, creativity, and exam readiness.

  • Student-Guided (SG) – Students use AI as a learning assistant to enhance reading and language awareness. They ask AI to explain vocabulary, summarise short texts, or identify tone and attitude, then compare responses with dictionaries or class discussions. The focus is on building comprehension, confidence and responsible AI use.

  • Student-Driven (SD) – Students apply AI to plan and draft writing tasks such as HKDSE-style essays. They use AI to generate ideas, organise content and refine their writing through feedback. By analysing and evaluating AI suggestions critically, they strengthen coherence, accuracy and writing style while developing independence.

  • Student-Led (SL) – Students take ownership of learning by designing their own prompt sets or mini AI tutors for exam revision and extended writing. They exchange AI-assisted drafts for peer feedback and reflect on how both AI and human input shape their progress. The focus is on autonomy, ethical awareness and self-directed growth as writers.

This progression turns AI into a learning partner — helping students think, write, and communicate more effectively while developing independence, integrity, and confidence in English.

Values Eduation

The ExPAND framework brings the Values Education Curriculum Framework (2021) to life through English learning that nurtures empathy, integrity, and national identity.

  • Student-Guided (SG) – Students use AI to explore short moral scenarios, such as a student tempted to use AI to complete homework. They discuss honesty, fairness, and responsibility, comparing their own views with AI-generated suggestions.

  • Student-Driven (SD) – In groups, students examine real-life examples of plagiarism or misinformation and co-develop class guidelines for responsible AI and online behaviour. They reflect on how integrity and respect apply to digital life.

  • Student-Led (SL) – Students design bilingual digital stories or short videos inspired by real experiences or traditional tales that highlight Chinese values such as perseverance or filial piety, sharing them at school assemblies or online.

This progression helps students connect moral reflection with authentic communication, turning AI from a tool into a catalyst for ethical awareness and cultural expression.

STEAM

The ExPAND framework connects AI with STEAM learning to spark curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving across disciplines.

  • Student-Guided (SG) – Students explore how AI tools can support scientific explanation or design thinking. For example, they might use AI to visualise a simple science experiment or generate ideas for an eco-friendly product design.

  • Student-Driven (SD) – Students apply AI in project planning and data analysis, such as designing a prototype, simulating an experiment, or interpreting results. They discuss how AI can assist creativity while recognising its limitations and ethical implications.

  • Student-Led (SL) – Students lead innovation projects that combine science, technology, and creativity — for instance, designing an AI-assisted recycling system or digital invention showcase. They present their projects to peers, reflecting on teamwork, innovation, and responsible AI use.

This progression helps students become critical thinkers and ethical innovators who can harness AI to explore, create, and lead in a technology-driven world.
