Five Stages
From AI Novice to AI-Literate Innovator
The five stages of ExPAND — Explore, Prompt, Apply, Navigate, and Develop — provide a clear progression for integrating AI into learning and teaching. Students first Explore AI tools and their potential, then Prompt effectively to engage critically and creatively. They Apply AI to meaningful, real-world tasks, before learning to Navigate ethical challenges and responsible use. Finally, they Develop autonomy by setting goals, tracking progress, and using AI to support lifelong, self-directed learning.

Building AI Literacy for Students and Teachers
The ExPAND framework places the development of AI literacy for both students and teachers at the heart of effective integration. At each stage, teachers not only facilitate student learning but also deepen their own understanding of AI’s uses, limits, and pedagogical value. Through exploration, prompt design, ethical reflection, and assessment planning, they build the skills to critically evaluate tools, design AI-supported activities, and guide responsible use. This dual focus ensures AI integration is not just technical adoption but a reflective, transformative practice.
